JAMES WHYTE FROM ZIMBABWE SCORES ANOTHER FIRST IN KENYA Carl Tundo of Kenya wins the IRC Safari Rally Despite the Kenyan ‘stage flyers’ Zimbabwean veteran Jamie Whyte and Phil Archneoul won the African Rally Championship category for the second straight event in 2009. Whyte was the top placed ARC driver in 4th overall position. Whyte extended his lead in the African series to 20 points with two time Africa Champion Muna Singh (6th overall) being the second driver among the ARC registered drivers. Whyte’s navigator Phil Archenoul was quite enthusiastic on their second straight ARC win but not without a praise of Kenya drivers who didn’t score ARC points by virtue of not registering for the competition. “Kenyans are hotshots, they drive like men possessed,” said Archenoul. Muna Singh of Zambia ended his Safari jinx when he realized his second finish in five attempts. Muna reckoned that Safari has really been a bad hunting ground." I am excited with my second position in the ARC. But I must admit Jamie drove exceptionally well at this event. I wish him all the best but as a competitor I would want to give him a run for his money. I look forward to the KCB Pearl of Africa Rally next month. Muna’s Subaru N10 was problematic all through the second leg.“We had no clutch at one stage and raced without a centre diff the whole day and had to run on rear wheel,” said Muna. Carl ‘Flash’ Tundo’s second KCB Safari Rally title in fives years invigorated his 2009 KCB Kenya National Rally Championship (KNRC) title chase. He also leads the KCB East African Rally Challenge.Tundo won the 2004 edition of KCB Safari Rally in South Coast, the KCB KNRC title in 2007, the 2006 Motor Personality of the Year award and is now seeking to recapture the KNRC title he lost to Baldev ‘Boldy’ Chager in 2008.Tundo was quite enthusiastic upon learning of his Safari victory at the regroup in Athi River service. After Rose’s suffered two punctures on Day Two in Elementaita, Tundo backed off and played it safe on Sunday enjoying a 1.20minutes cushion. Kenyans ran away with podium slots with Tundo’s Dalbit Rally Team ace, Alastair Cavenagh (EVO 9) taking second 1.17 minutes behind and Lee Rose completing the podium in third overall place. Zimbabwean Jamie Whyte (Subaru N10) came home 4th , Chager 5th and Muna 6th. Out of 43 cars that entered the main ARC class only 30 survived the demanding dry and very dusty conditions in Athi River and Elementaita. In the Pirelli Star Driver Africa qualifing there were six entrants and the surprise winner was Raaji Bharij and Raja Sehmi in their Subaru N10 who for the first time drove a Group N car and surprised all by setting six fastest times of the 13 stages. Second qualifer in this event to go to the shoot-out in Rwanda is Tanzanian Navraj Hans and Frank Gitau in a Mitsubishi Evo 9. The north region quaifing events are now over and the four qualifiers to go to the final from this region are Raaji Bharij (Kenya), Navraj Hans (Tanzania), Randeep Birdi (Tanzania) and Mathieu Adrianjafy (Madagascar). Kenya’s Baldev Chager and Alastair Cavenagh were joint overnight leaders clocking 1.08minutes at the 0.94Km spectator stage at Uhuru park. Joint third in 1.09minutes were 2007 Kenya Champion Carl Tundo, Riyaz Kurji of Uganda, Emma Katto also from Uganda, Tanzania Pirelli star driver Navraj Hans and Rwandese Giancarlo Davite. It was a bitter pill for series leaders , the Zimbabwean oldies Jamie Whyte and Phil Achenoul who could only manage 32nd position. Archenoul staunchly admitted they were not at home with short and tight stages. “We spun twice and lost quite some seconds. But I must admit that Kenyan boys are hot shots. Our strategy is to be near the podium and get top on the African Rally Championship list,” Archenoul said. Briton Ian Freestone in a Ford Escort RS was the overhinght leader in the supplementary class. Freestone clocked 1.13minutes beating vertarn Aslam Khan (Ford Escort RS) by four second. Jasmeet Chana led the 13 drivers in the 2WD class in 1.17minutes. 2009 KCB SAFARI RALLY PROVISIONAL RESULTS AFTER LEG 1A 1. Baldev Chager/Farakh Yusuf (Subaru Impreza N12) 1:08, 2.
