History About The Zambia International Rally

The Zambia International Motor Rally, also known as Safari Zambia and Zambia Rally, is an international rally racing event is organised by the Zambia Motorsports Association. The rally is based in the Zambian capital of Lusaka and travels north of the capital to Chisamba for its competition stages. The event is a round of the African Rally Championship and the Zambian Rally Championship.

The event, one of the oldest in Africa, was first founded in 1969 by the Lusaka Motor Club with John Ireland as Clerk of the Course, who was then ZMSA Competition Secretary, it gained a reputation for being tough and for its formative years was some 2000 miles in length. Apart from a break from 1977 to 1984 during an economic crisis the event has been held continuously. The event is one of the veteran rallies of the African Rally Championship.

Zambian motorsport legend Satwant Singh has dominated the event, winning 14 times, his first in 1972, his most recent in 2002. This included a five-year consecutive streak in the 1990s. Foreign drivers have taken several victories, the first in 1987 to Zimbabwean driver Bill Rautenbach. His son Conrad is the most recent in 2011. While Super 2000 cars have moved in on several FIA zone events in recent years they only have a single victory, Conrad Rautenbach’s second win in 2011 as Group N Subarus and Mitsubishis continue to hold sway over the results.

Three rounds of the 2018 Africa rally championship series have so far put behind and all three have registered different winners in Ivory Coast, Kenya and South Africa.

Manvir Baryan , York Rally 2018

Reigning ARC champions Manvir Baryan and Drew Sturrock are the latest to step on this year’s winners’ list after their victory in South Africa.

The Kenyan picked up from were he stopped in the regional competition by dominating the third round of ARC; South Africa’s York rally with yet again an impressive performance in his Skoda Fabia R5.

Baryan won the York rally with a 3 minutes, 14 seconds lead to become the first non South African driver to win the South Africa’s ARC round.

“This has been the most challenging event of all the ARC rounds we have covered. The roads were so technical, tricky and wet.

“Winning this rally has been our main highlight of the event. The competition was so tight but we managed to keep our focus till the end,” said the Kenyan driver.

Baryan’s victory brings him level with earlier event winners, Kenya’s Carl Tundo and Ivory Coast’s Gary Chaynes on the ARC leaderboard with 25 points.

The three way tie makes the ARC chase wide open into the fourth round.

Kenya’s Piero Cannobio and Silvia Frigo  remain in fourth position; six points behind the leaders.

South Africa”s Guy Botterril and Simon Vacy Lyle are seven points behind with country-mate Matthew Vacy Lyle and Rikus Fourie on 15 points.

After scoring a hat-trick of African Rally Championship victories with his latest in the Rwanda Rally, Kenya’s Manvir Baryan is now preparing for the final round in Zambia.

The Skoda Fabia driver needs a single point from the maximum 25 to secure the African Rally Championship crown regardless of what his closest rival, Leroy Gomes does in his home event.

With a maximum of twenty-five points to score in Zambia, Baryan will need to just finish the rally to win the ARC crown. He has 90 points while Gomes follows in the second place with 65 points.

Gomes was soft in his assumption about winning the title when I talked to him while in Rwanda.

“To be honest I find myself to be very lucky trailing in the second place. I never thought of this position when I started the competition that I would be rated amongst the best in Africa. I will be very happy to finish second,” said Leroy.

Thirty-five-old Baryan, who made his Rallying debut in the 2011 Guru Nanak Rally in a Subaru Impreza N14, has so far won two Kenya National Rally Championship events – Mombasa and Fly540 rallies respectively.

He has also won three rounds of the 2017 African Rally Championship events in Tanzania, Uganda and Rwanda at this early stage of participating in one of the most demanding motor sport events in the world.

Baryan will first take part in the Guru Nanak Rally before his contingent of over 15 persons prepares to move to Zambia for the final round of the ARC series.

The team includes senior members of the service crew in addition to the truck and pickup drivers.

The event, one of the oldest in the Africa Rally championship series.

Zambia’s legendary driver, Satwant Singh has dominated the event, winning 14 times, his first in 1972, his most recent in 2002. This included a five-year consecutive streak in the 1990s.

Past Winners Zambia International Rally

Foreign drivers have taken several victories, the first in 1987 to Zimbabwean driver Bill Rautenbach. His son Conrad is the most recent in 2011.

While Super 2000 cars have moved in on several FIA zone events in recent years they only have a single victory, Conrad Rautenbach’s second win in 2011 as Group N Subarus and Mitsubishis continue to hold sway over the results.
